The newly appointed Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) held its first meeting

The newly appointed Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) held its first meeting in closed session today at UN Headquarters in New York.  Its function is to provide the IAEA Board of Governors and the Director-General with advice on scientific and technical questions arising out of the Agency's program. The seven members were appointed by the Board of Governors in their personal capacities with the concurrence of their governments. Mr. W. Sterling Cole, Director-General of the Agency, who was also present at today's meeting, and Dr. W. B. Lewis of Canada, were elected Chairman and Vice-Chairman, respectively.  Seen here at the conference table during the meeting are L-R: Dr. Robert Spence (United Kingdom); Dr. W. B. Lewis (Canada); Professor Bertrand Goldschmidt (France); Dr. Homi J. Bhabha (India); Mr. Cole; Professor V.S. Emelyanov (USSR); Professor Bernhard Gross (Brazil); and Professor I.I. Rabi (United States).
