Gifford Scott adjusting the experimental equipment

Gifford Scott adjusting the experimental equipment he and two fellow researchers are using to study an extremely small and mysterious twisting force they recently discovered. The phenomenon, reported in a recent issue of The Physical Review, a publication of The American Physical Society, occurs when a warm rod is suspended by a thread in a vertical chamber (center of photo) which is filled with a rarefied cool gas. When a very weak magnetic field is applied parallel to the rod, a slight torque or twisting force results which twists the rod. The experimental equipment is located at the Kettering Magnetics Laboratory, at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, Credit Line: AIP Emilio Segrè Visual Archives, Physics Today Collection
