Emilio Segrè, Clyde Wiegand, Edward Lofgren, Owen Chamberlain and Tom Ypsilantis in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory

Photograph was taken in October, 1955, at the time of the discovery of the antiproton at the University of California Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley. Left to right are: Dr. Emilio Segrè, Dr. Clyde Wiegand, Dr. Edward Lofgren, Dr. Owen Chamberlain and Tom Ypsilantis, then a graduate student. The discovery team consisted of Segrè, Wiegand, Chamberlain and Yspilantis. Dr. Lofgren was and is the physicist in charge of the Bevatron, the accelerator with which the particle was discovered. Some of the equipment used for the discovery is in left background. The concrete is shielding behind which the Bevatron is located. Large pipe, upper left, is the channel through which the particles from the Bevatron, including antiprotons, were piped to detectors. Drs. Chamberlain and Segrè were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1959 for the discovery. The work of the Laboratory is supoorted by the Atomic Energy Commission., Credit Line: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, courtesy of AIP Emilio Segrè Visual Archives
