Portrait of Morris Pripstein

Morris Pripstein, a former postdoc at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, was the chairman of Scientists for Sakharov, Orlov and Sharansky (SOS), which worked to support dissident Soviet scientists Andrei Sakharov, Yuri Orlov and Anatoly Scharansky. In a protest against the jailing and oppression of dissident Russian scientists, the committee organized 7,900 scientists and engineers from 44 countries who agreed to suspend professional relations with their counterparts in the Soviet Union. Reportedly, those protesting included 32 Nobel Laureates. Pripstein, a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, said the boycott would probably continue until Orlov and others were released., Credit Line: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Department of Physics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, courtesy of AIP Emilio Segrè Visual Archives
