E.I. Mogilevsky and Edward Kononovich conversing outdoors

My principal host at IZMIRAN (Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio-Wave propagation) was E. I. Mogilevsky (right), here standing beside Edward Kononovich (Sternberg Astronomical Institute) on the steps of Moscow University. We gawked at the splendor of the meeting room, enjoyed a few moments of an animated lecture on mechanics, and then were startled by the open mean market around the corner. Kononovich shows us some fine solar filtergrams produced by Fabry-Perot etalons. Mogilevsky, who is head of the solar department, has conducted measurements of solar magnetism for 20 years -- through his work in little known in the U.S. He and his colleagues have reached the interesting conclusion that solar fields consist to two components: a strong (KG) field of sub-granule dimensions, and an overall pervading weak field. A large portrait of Maxwell (not Lenin -- for a change) hangs over his desk., Credit Line: Kitt Peak National Observatory, courtesy AIP Emilio Segrè Visual Archives, Physics Today Collection
