An aerial view of a portion of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab)
Abstract/Description: | An aerial view of a portion of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), Batavia, Illinois. The main accelerator lies to the right. A portion of its four-mile circumference can be seen at right, identified by the road and service buildings at regular intervals, as well as the cooling pond which marks the inside edge of the accelerator. Starting at bottom center, moving upward: the Booster accelerator (the circular structure surrounding the cooling pond); the 'H' structure containing the linear accelerator, at left; the main control room, center, and the beam transfer hall, right; the Central Laboratory Building (circular auditorium at the rear). The three prong-like lines mark the three experimental lines through which the proton beam from the accelerator travels to the experimenters' set ups at the end of the lines. |
