Research Associate and head of the Experimental Division of
Project Matterhorn, now known as the Plasma Physics Laboratory.A native of Illinois, he earned a B.S. from the University
of Chicago in 1940 and served on the faculty until the U.S.
Office of Scientific Research and Development sent him to
Harvard to conduct research on radar countermeasures. After World
War II, he returned to Chicago and completed work for his Ph.D.
while an instructor in the physical sciences department. His
appointment as Assistant Professor of Physics at Iowa State
was made in 1950.At Princeton, he succeeded Dr. Lyman Spitzer, Jr. as
Director of PPPL, a position Dr. Gottlieb has held since
1961. The professor of Astrophysical Sciences is a member
of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Chi and is a founder and former
first chairman of the Plasma Physics Division of The
American Physical Society.The author of several papers and articles on cosmic rays
and plasma physics, Professor Gottlieb is a recipient of the North
Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) Senior Foreign Fellowship
