Artist's concept shows nuclear reactor containment system for General Electric's standard line
Abstract/Description: | Artist's concept (drawn to scale) shows nuclear reactor containment system for General Electric's standard line of 500,000-kilowatt, central station nuclear power plants. The containment system is one of many engineered safe-guards provided for nuclear power plants powered by GE boiling water reactors. Nuclear boiler, approximately 60 feet high, is shown in central part of drawing, positioned vertically inside dry well (lightbuld shaped cutaway), which measures about 120 feet high and 70 feet in diameter at the widest portion. Directly below the dry well, and encircling it, is a metal tube called the absorption chamber which measures 130 feet in over-all diameter. During plant operation the absorption chamber is partially filled with water and is designed to condense any steam which might be released because of a system mal-function. |
