Buckler Connects Optical-Fiber Cables

'In a field test of lightwave communication, Michael Buckler of Bell's Atlanta lab is using an optical-fiber patch cord to connect to a fiber from an underground cable. Each of the fibers from the cable ends in an optical coupler, the covers of which are the yellow 'buttons' visible on the front panel. The rack-mounted equipment includes regenerators, which amplify and retransmit the digital light signals.', Credit Line: Bell Laboratories / Alcatel-Lucent USA Inc., courtesy AIP Emilio Segrè Visual Archives
