Abstract/Description: Describes the papers and meetings leading to the formation of a permanent organization in 1929. Discusses how it was named; who comprised the formation committee; relationship with the American Chemical Society; early officers of the society. Also discusses the Journal of Rheology; formation of the American Institute of Physics; work towards establishing a standard of viscosity; attempts to agree on rheological definitions. Publications and monographs relevant to the Society are described along with short histories of early meetings and symposia. Received from John C. Miller, Ph.D., in 2003.
