Abstract/Description: | Describes the papers and meetings leading to the formation of a permanent organization in 1929. Discusses how it was named; who comprised the formation committee; relationship with the American Chemical Society; early officers of the society. Also discusses the Journal of Rheology; formation of the American Institute of Physics; work towards establishing a standard of viscosity; attempts to agree on rheological definitions. Publications and monographs relevant to the Society are described along with short histories of early meetings and symposia. Received from John C. Miller, Ph.D., in 2003. |

Executed by directive from the Society Forms part of the American Institute of Physics' Niels Bohr Library Institutional Histories Collection. A professional society of chemists, physicists, biologists, and others that seeks the advancement of rheology, the theory and precise measurement of the deformation and flow of matter and its applications, through meetings and publications. The Society was organized in 1929 and is a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. |
